Lewiston-Clarkston Partners Habitat for Humanity serves Asotin County Washington and Nez Perce County Idaho. It is an ecumenical Christian based volunteer organization dedicated to eliminating poverty housing and homelessness from our service area. Habitat builds decent affordable houses in partnership with families in need. It is not a giveaway but a "hands up program". These homes have between 1000 to 1200 square feet of living space, dependent upon family size, and have no garage or carport.
The Lewiston-Clarkston Partners organization became an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International in 1991. Since then the local affiliate has constructed 24 new homes and remodeled one home. The homes are sold to partner families in need at no profit on a twenty-year no interest mortgage. The partner families receive a new home for about $375 per month that includes principal, taxes and insurance.
Qualifying families are chosen from the 25% to 50% level of the median income for Nez Perce and Asotin counties. Families must have sufficient income to make the monthly payments and maintain other family expenses. The family must also be living in substandard housing such as inefficient heating, undependable plumbing, insufficient room for the size of the family, or live in an unsafe neighborhood. The family must agree to do 500 hours of "sweat equity" work on their own and/or other Habitat homes and projects prior to moving into their new home.
Applications for prospective partner families are accepted periodically. When prospective homeowners are needed, we advertise in the paper, on the radio, and post notices throughout the valley for new applicants. Completed applications go to our Family Selection Committee which makes certain applicants qualify and after careful review recommend the neediest to the Board of Directors as new partner families.

Millard and Linda Fuller started Habitat for Humanity in 1976. Since that modest beginning over 300,000 homes have been built worldwide. Ten percent of cash donations received locally is passed on to Habitat for Humanity International to help build homes around the world. No federal money is used for the actual construction of homes but can be used for infrastructure and land purchase.
Our words and actions are for the ultimate purpose of putting shelter on the hearts and minds of people in such a powerful way that poverty housing and homelessness become socially, politically and religiously unacceptable.
